Our Story
Rooted in the Overberg. Focused on Quality.
Cape Overberg Honeybush is a South African-owned producer and exporter of premium honeybush tea, working across the full value chain — from harvesting and processing to packaging and export.
Our honeybush grows on wild land in the Overberg, Western Cape, one of the most botanically diverse regions in the world. The plant species harvested is Cyclopia genistoides, naturally adapted to the region’s climate and soil, requiring no irrigation or chemical inputs.
We follow regenerative 18-month harvesting cycles, allowing plants to recover fully and ensuring long-term sustainability of the resource.

Our Products
Our Honeybush (Cyclopia genistoides) is organically grown and sustainably harvested in the Overberg mountains of South Africa.
Growing wild between indigenous fynbos vegetation, it is naturally caffeine-free, smooth, and aromatic, reflecting the unique terroir of the region.
Fermented Honeybush Tea - Fine Cut (Tea Bag Cut)
A uniform, fine cut ideal for tea bags. Naturally sweet with a smooth, rounded flavour and a rich amber infusion. Consistent extraction makes it well suited for commercial tea blending and packaging.
Fermented Honeybush Tea – Coarse Cut
A larger leaf and stem cut designed for loose-leaf brewing. Produces a full-bodied cup with warm honey and woody notes, highlighting the depth developed during fermentation.
Fermented Honeybush Tea – Tea Dust
Very fine particles generated during processing. Suitable for instant tea formulations, extracts, or industrial applications where rapid infusion is required.
Green Honeybush Tea – Fine Cut (Tea Bag Cut)
Unfermented Honeybush with a lighter colour and fresher, more herbal flavour profile. Fine cut for tea bags, offering a delicate, clean infusion with subtle floral notes.
Green Honeybush Tea – Coarse Cut
Unfermented, loose-leaf Honeybush retaining its natural green character. Mild, slightly grassy, and refreshing, ideal for premium loose-leaf and speciality tea markets.

Health Benefits
Cyclopia genistoides (Honeybush)
Cyclopia genistoides is an indigenous South African fynbos species belonging to the Fabaceae family.
It has been traditionally consumed as a herbal infusion and is increasingly studied for its unique polyphenolic profile and antioxidant capacity.
Key Bioactive Compounds
Scientific analysis of Cyclopia genistoides has identified several naturally occurring compounds of interest:
Mangiferin
A xanthonoid polyphenol widely studied for its antioxidant properties. Mangiferin contributes significantly to the total antioxidant capacity of Honeybush.
Hesperidin
A flavanone glycoside also found in citrus fruits, studied for its role in supporting vascular and cellular health.
Isomangiferin
A structural analogue of mangiferin with demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory studies.
Flavones and Other Polyphenols
Cyclopia species contain a spectrum of flavonoids and phenolic compounds contributing to oxidative stability and overall antioxidant potential.
Antioxidant Activity
Multiple laboratory analyses (in vitro studies) demonstrate that Cyclopia genistoides exhibits measurable antioxidant activity through free radical scavenging capacity.
These properties are attributed to its high polyphenol content.
Antioxidants help protect cells against oxidative stress, a natural process linked to aging and environmental exposure.
Naturally Caffeine-Free
Cyclopia genistoides contains:
-
0% caffeine
-
Low tannin levels
-
No added sugars
-
This makes it suitable for:
-
Evening consumption
-
Sensitive individuals
-
Functional beverage formulations
Low Tannin Profile
Compared to Camellia sinensis (black/green tea), Honeybush contains significantly lower tannin levels, resulting in:
-
Reduced bitterness
-
Smooth mouthfeel
-
Minimal astringency
This characteristic is particularly valued in premium European and Japanese markets focused on sensory quality.
Fermented vs. Green Honeybush
-
Fermented Honeybush develops enhanced aroma and honey-like sweetness due to enzymatic oxidation of polyphenols.
-
Green (Unfermented) Honeybush retains a higher proportion of certain native polyphenols and presents a lighter, more herbaceous sensory profile.
